Phoenix, Arizona: A bronze statue of political activist Charlie Kirk was unveiled outside Turning Point USA headquarters in Phoenix on Thursday, one year after he was killed at a speaking event at Utah Valley University.
People gathered to mourn Kirk and reflect on his legacy.
Turning Point USA was founded by Kirk and is now led by his widow, Erika Kirk.
Trudy Thuring travelled three hours with her husband from Kingman, Arizona, to see the memorial.
"And he just was a voice of reason," Thuring said tearfully. "And he'd just wanted to communicate with people. I can't even believe that somebody kill him for that."
Since Kirk's death last year, interest in Turning Point USA has grown, and the organisation continues to be involved in campus events and elections.
"I hope that even when they go to the campuses, they are able to encourage even the young voters to vote in a way that makes America better," said Hanna Abenoja, a home-school teacher visiting the memorial from Phoenix.
Staff members and others attending the event outside Turning Point USA held a moment of silence at 11.23 am in Phoenix, which was 12.23 pm in Utah, to commemorate the time Kirk was fatally shot the previous year.
Suspect Tyler Robinson, 23, is facing multiple charges in connection with Kirk's death, including a capital murder charge. Robinson has pleaded not guilty in the case.
